Thanks for visiting the Humbled Eyes Photography blog! My blog allows me to communicate regularly with friends, family, current couples, wedding guests, future couples and other photographers. The Humbled Eyes Photography blog highlights my personal and professional adventures as a full-time professional destination wedding photographer!
Man oh man….2007 was a great year! I hung out with some amazing couples on the biggest day of their lives! My 2008/2009 schedule is ramping up to be amazing too. I’ve been asked to photograph Pennsylvania weddings, a couple New York weddings, New Jersey weddings, Maryland weddings, Delaware weddings, Virginia weddings, a North Carolina wedding, a destination wedding in Key West Florida, a wedding in Miami Flordia, a wedding in Napa Valley California, a destination wedding in Santa Cruz California, a destination wedding in Italy, a Los Cabos Mexico destination wedding, Cancun Mexico destination wedding and some Riu Ochos Rios Jamaica destination weddings! One of my clients hired me to go down to Kingston Jamaica and Montego Bay Jamaica to photograph two events with Prince Charles!!! I only have a couple dates available for 2008 and have already booked 13 weddings for 2009!! So if you want to hang out on your wedding day, please drop me a line…even if you don’t have a date set, reception site picked or even if there is no fat rock on your finger!

Mendenhall Inn wedding

Cynthia is yet another “Delaware Knottie” who booked me for her wedding photography! Since then she has been one of my biggest promoters. Cynthia, Jody and I had a blast shooting their Annapolis Maryland engagement pictures and I knew their wedding would be great too.

It was finally Cynthia and Jody’s wedding day and I was pumped!!! The day started with the girls getting ready at Mendenhall Inn in Mendenhall Pennsylvania. Everyone seemed very calm and excited about the wedding day! We then headed over to the ceremony site where many tears were shed and kaughs were shared. Then is was off to the Brandywine River for some bridal party pictures. Then headed back to Mendenhall Inn for the reception full of great food and dancing!

Mendenhall Inn had a great railroad track behind the ballroom. It was awesome!!!

Photography Workshop

For that last two years I’ve been donating my time/photography to The Children’s Beach House. When I’m available I cover their fund raising events! So this year I was asked to teach some of the kids about photography. The photography workshop was a great experience and I’m so glad I had a chance to be a part of these kids’ lives. Teaching is no joke….I had to be a teacher, friend, an organizer, disciplinarian, photographer and coach! I have a lot more respect for teachers and apologize again and again for what I put my old teachers through!!!

Many people ask me all the time if I have an off season as a wedding photographer. The answer is heck NO! Wedding photography is a year around job for me. Although some months I only have one wedding like this past July. So it gives me some time to relax a bit. My good friend and neighbor Phil invited me to go crabbing one weekday and I loved it! Now we try to go crabbing on the Broadkill River at least once a week. It’s great to get out on the water and catch some fat crabs!!!

Destination Vietnam

I dipped into the archives and found some pictures from my travels in Vietnam a couple years back. This was my first trip to Asia that was not with the Navy! We endured a 12 hour flight from San Diego and ended in Ho Chi Minh Airport. San Diego to Los Angeles….into Seoul Korea and then onto Ho Chi Minh (Saigon). It was a heck of a long flight, and we landed around midnight. We awoke early the next morning to have bun bo hue (pigs feet noodle soup) in 90 degree weather! I had no idea what to expect and enjoyed destroying all my stereotypes about this country! The land and the people were fabulous!!!

This man got my attention when I walked by and asked me, with hand gestures, to shoot his picture.

This was the first interaction with the locals….which was a good one.

About a block from the house….these kids were yelling in Vietnamese and

wanted their picture taken, too! I was beginning to like this place.

Ho Chi Minh City has a population of over 6 million people and I’d say they

must have about 6 million mopeds, too! You see a car or two, but the streets are packed full of mopeds. There were

moped repair shops on every block!

Downtown Ho Chi Minh City was really nice and had plenty of shopping and restaurants.

Rush hour…..with millions of mopeds and no traffic lights!

I made some friends…..can you see me? I’ll give you a hint….I’m the large white guy! lol

We took a trip out to the country and these kids showed me around their village. We walked

around and they pronounced and pointed to all the fruits and flowers.

Ho Chi Minh City has no drainage systems and when it rains…..it floods!

Later in the week we took a 3-day bus trip to northern Vietnam.

During one of our stops, I found the road to Cambodia with the BMW and the shady dude! The best part was during our

stop…..a popcorn vendor with carnival music blaring set up shop next to the bus! Twilight zone?

After 2 straight days on the bus….we stopped into the cool town of Hue. Showered up and was back on the road again.

Outside of Hanoi we stopped at very small village. Local farmers were

burning trash and the smoke created a cool haze!

The city of Halong Bay in Northern Vietnam was beautiful!

Sunset at Halong Bay was wonderful, too. Ha Long Bay, meaning of the Descending Dragon is often touted by proud Vietnamese as the world’s Eighth wonder. One of the main attractions of Ha long is the bay’s calm water and the thousands of limestone mountains dotting the seascape. Some of the islands are quite large and there are small alcoves with sandy beaches where swimming is possible.

This was a community of floating markets that we stopped by on our 5 hour boat ride through the bay. We stopped and picked up fresh fish that our captain cooked while we hiked the caverns. It was the freshest seafood I have ever had. These floating villages are about 2 hours away from land and make their living selling seafood to people passing by. Also, the captain of our boat lived on the boat with his wife and kid (like many others)…making their living giving tours and cooking for tourists. The 5 hour tour, which included cooking our fish, was only $20.

Bethany Beach engagement pictures

Jessie contacted me after seeing Joanna and Ryan’s Greenville Country Club wedding! We had so much to talk about because of similar interests……photography, travel and Old Bay covered blue crabs!!!! She had the longest first email I had ever received and prolly one of the coolest!

Here is what she said, “

Rob,
I have been looking at your website eagerly for almost a year now. In helping other friends with their weddings, I started looking- and since I’m a photographer myself (but I don’t do weddings) I always like to see what others are up to. You work is breath-taking. When I got together with Joanna after her wedding and found out you shot her wedding, I was thrilled with your work! She showed me the slide shows you put together of their engagement session and the wedding, and I’m sold. I keep looking at other photographers, but can’t seem to enjoy their work as much as yours.
Even though we don’t have things as set as maybe we should to start to connect with a photographer, I’ve been anxiously waiting to get in touch with you.
I was especially sold when I saw how natural Ryan was in the photos - I know that he can clam up in front of the camera, and my fiance is even worse, so I know that you will be able to make his funny-side come out!
I just wanted to introduce myself and hopefully be able to start planning, so I don’t miss out on the chance to have the photographer I want at our wedding. As a photographer, though, this is the one thing in our wedding that I insist on not skimping on. It is only one day, and the photography is the only element that lasts- I want it to be not only excellent, but an experience in and of itself.

Well, I finally met Jessie and Will for the first time in Bethany Beach for some engagement pictures! It didn’t take long for Will to open up despite his track record…but that is all part of my job! Most of my couples are not professional models, and areÂ unable to easily pop poses and smiles for the camera.

I jokingly said, “Jess jump and Will can catch you!” Well……she jumped!!

Great catch! LOL

Cape Henlopen State Park Engagement pictures

Laura is yet another “Knottie” who booked me from TheKnot.com! Anyway, Laura and Ted are planning their Brandywine Country Club wedding from San Francisco California. We met up in Lewes Delaware and drove out onto the beach! I even let Ted drive my truck on the beach for a bit. I wish we had more time…..but I guess it will have to wait until the wedding!

Thanks for hanging out, guys…..and THANK YOU for the amazing chocolates!

Proposal photography

There is a first time for everything! One of my buddies (Gubby) from high school asked me to photograph him proposing to his girlfriend on the beach. So, I nervously agreed. This is tough because I didn’t want to ruin the proposal by being seen! We planned, and I scoped out the area in Fenwick Island Delaware. I pretended I was sitting on the beach laying out next to the “doggy dropping bag” station. Everything went smoothly and when Gubby told Mel that I was up near the dunes it was hilarious! It reminded me of when someone finds out they’re on Candid Camera…and Mel turned around with a huge smile….scanning left and right. We then headed over to Fager’s Island in Ocean City Maryland for dinner at sunset. Then, Gubby asked me to be the best man in his wedding!!!! Oh yeah!!! Now I have the responsibility as the best man to find them a wedding photographer!

Hotel duPont wedding

Well Christen, Lyle and I had an awesome time during their Lewes Delaware engagement pictures. Their wedding festivities started off at Hotel Dupont where the girls and family got ready. Then we moved over to St. Elizabeth Church for the ceremony. After some some quick wedding pictures at the Brandywine River we headed back for their Hotel DuPont wedding!
